Brown Eyes

She took a deep breath and shook her head and again turned to stare on her blank paper. How could she forget about the exam and spent the whole night watching Grey’s? She turned to find a few students sighing as well and that sight raised her hope a bit. She was not alone.

“One exam gone bad wouldn’t make everything worst, right?” she thought for herself

She closed her eyes and pretended to be mentally calculating. She looked up and caught Mr. Brown Eyes staring at her. She pretended she didn’t notice and opted to look down and write a few numbers on her blank paper probably to conceal her blushing face.

Her hopeless romantic bubbles burst upon hearing the bell ring. She stared again on her blank paper and managed to jot down a few more solutions and crammed the more when students started to pass their test papers. Minutes later she found herself with just a few more students left purging their empty heads for the right solution. She confidently continued until all of them stood up with similar grimace stamped on their faces. She wasn’t the last one to pass the test paper, Mr. Brown Eyes was.

She walked out slowly hoping he would catch up on her, he could catch up. She forbade herself to look back and probably to save a little pride. She intentionally dropped her pen twice to delay her journey. Her plan was an ultimate success. The third time her pen fell Mr. Brown Eyes picked it up for her.

She blushed.

He smiled.

She slowed down her reflexes and calmed herself down. She then slowly extended her hand to receive her pen. Despite wanting to say so many other things, introduce herself perhaps, her lips managed to form the words “Thank You”. She smiled and he blushed.

She watched probably too much soap operas that she could very well act perfectly like being in one. It was probably one cute-meet she had always dreamed of.

“Did you find the exam difficult?” He asked now initiating to walk going for the stairs.

“Uh.. no.. not at all… it was all in the book but I found the last page so confusing though” She trailed after him partly concealing the truth to impress him.

“Good for you… You’re probably a genius” He smiled. She melted.

She turned red. Speechless. She crammed for words!

“Huh.. No.. I mean… I just read the book that’s all…” She opened her bag and took out her cellphone probably wanting him to figure out what she wanted him to do.

“Ask for my number idiot!” she mentally screamed

“Oh… I read the book too… probably not as much as you did…” She felt guilty. She never opened the book. It didn’t bother her that much though. And their eyes met again. He missed her sign. She was obviously flashing her cellphone right to his face but he was too occupied to notice. She finally got a good glimpse of his brown eyes. She felt like floating in mid-air.

They were now at the bottom of the stairs and she felt dreadfully guilty of ditching her friend Sussie probably waiting in vain at the canteen. They’d eat lunch together. They usually do. She asked her to reserve a table. Now, she was not only hoping he would ask for her number, she was hoping she’d ask her for lunch!

His cellphone rang. He answered it in a different language, she noticed his face light up and her heart sank. It must be somebody special. She walked a little bit farther from him respecting his privacy. They were still walking in one direction though ‘til she finally managed to stop just in time Mr. Brown Eye’s Call ended.

“Hey, I’d rather grab something to eat at the canteen. I’m totally starving after that exam” She avoided staring at him and started to move in the opposite direction.

“Well, ok then..” His voice a little softer now in her ears. She was walking distantly from him looking straight ahead and never looking back.

“See ya around Melissa!” She was taken by surprise when she heard her name. She turned around and saw him still unmoving. She smiled. She Blushed and went on to conceal her gaiety.

“He finally called me by name! He knows my name!!” And she floated to the canteen.

“Let’s take this one day at a time.” She sighed and still caught him looking her way.
